Seven Sisters Falls – Here’s What You Should Know to Plan A Trip

The Seven Sisters Falls, also known as Nohsngithiang Falls lies in Cherrapunji in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.

Gushing down from a height of 315 m (1,033 ft) over the Khasi hills, this waterfall features amongst one of the highest waterfalls in India.

The falls is separated with seven streams of water which exemplifies the seven sister states of north-east India.

How To Get There

The Seven Sisters Falls is located at a distance of about 4 km from Cherrapunji main town and 57 km from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.

By Air: Umroi airport in Shillong is the nearest domestic airport. Air India and Indigo Airlines run direct flights to Shillong from Kolkata. The other major domestic and international airport is located in Guwahati. It is nearly 5 hours drive to Cherrapunji from Guwahati airport.

By Train: The nearest railhead to Seven Sisters Falls is in Guwahati. It has direct trains from many major cities of the country, such as Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi.

Best season to visit

Cherrapunji is one of the wettest places on earth and the weather remains pleasant throughout the year.

Rainy season offers the most scenic view of the Seven Sisters Falls when it flows with immense fury.

So, you can visit any time of the year but monsoon is the preferred season to experience the fullness of the waterfall.

Accommodation

You can stay in Cherrapunji or Shillong. There are many nice resorts and home-stays in Cherrapunji.

Book a home-stay if you want to closely experience the authentic culture of this place. From Shillong, it is nearly 2.5 hours drive to the Seven Sisters Falls.

  • Remember to check the weather forecast on the day of your visit. You wouldn’t be able to see the falls if it’s too cloudy
  • Carry an umbrella with you as it may start to rain anytime
  • Start your journey early morning to avoid peak hour traffic if you are staying in Shillong and driving to Cherrapunji

Located just a few kilometers away from the Seven Sisters Falls is the beautiful Nohkalikai Falls. This waterfall is famous for its huge green colour plunge pool.
