The Konkan coast of Maharashtra is dotted with unspoiled beaches and picturesque landscapes. And, Ganpatipule beach is one of the most scenic beaches along this shoreline that never fails to captivate visitors with its pristine beauty.
Located about 334 km from Mumbai and 300 km from Pune, this beach is also a popular weekend getaway from both cities. Our trip to Ganpatipatipule from Mumbai was a much-needed escape from the humdrum of city life.
It is much less commercialized compared to some of the famous beaches of Maharashtra. If you are considering a visit to Ganpatipule beach, refer to this detailed travel guide to plan a memorable trip.
A Quick Glance Through
How To Get There
The nearest railway station is in Ratnagiri, which is almost 30 km away from the beach. Ratnagiri has direct trains from cities like Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad.
From Ratnagiri station, the most economical way to reach here is to hire an auto-rickshaw. It takes close to an hour to reach Ganpatipule.
Cabs are more expensive but you can rent a cab as well depending on your budget. Mumbai (340 km) serves as the nearest airport to Ganpatipule. It is roughly 8 hours nonstop drive from Mumbai.
Refer to this map for driving directions from Ratnagiri railway station to the beach.
Things To Do at Ganpatipule Beach
1. Pristine Beach
Regarded as one of the finest beaches along the Konkan coast, Ganpatipule beach is known for its sparkling blue waters. The beach derives its name from the ancient Ganpatipule temple situated in the vicinity.
Cheerful waves, a long stretch of golden and silver sands, lined with coconut and cashew trees, and tranquil vibes from all around are what make this trip an unforgettable experience. Relax at the beach basking in the sun or enjoy sipping on coconut water.
Unlike many touristy beaches, there are only basic amenities available at this beach. You can see some small shops selling snacks and coconut water. Paid changing room facility can be availed at nominal charges.
2. Indulge in Water Sports
In addition to the azure waters and wide sandy beach, Ganpatipule offers a plethora of thrilling water sports to choose from. Speed boat, jet ski and banana rides are the popular ones.
Nothing could feel more exciting than exploring a beach on a horse’s back. Many family travelers particularly those with young kids go for horse-cart rides (pulled by a horse).
You can rent a beach scooter as well and traverse the beach to enjoy the panoramic beauty of the place.
Of late, a few underwater sports like snorkeling have also started. Depending on the underwater visibility on a particular day, it may or may not be available.

3. Visit Ganpatipule Temple
Situated right on the beach at the foothills of the evergreen Sahyadri ranges, Ganpatipule temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha.
This temple is a major attraction for tourists visiting the beach. It is also known as the temple of Swayambhu, which in Sanskrit means ‘self-manifested’.
The 400-year-old idol of Lord Ganesha is believed to have naturally arisen from the earth. Unlike many other temples where the deities face east, the Ganesha idol in this temple is west-facing. Many devotees walk around the hill as a mark of respect to the deity.
It is visited by thousands of worshippers during the famous Ganpati festival, celebrated with great gusto in Maharashtra.
4. Watch Spectacular Sunset
There can’t be a better way to end a beautiful day than watching a gorgeous beach sunset. If you are at this beach close to sundown hours, it’s worth waiting for a while for the sunset. I captured this moment from the top of a hill in Ganpatipule.
The sky is filled with vivid colours like an exploding firework as the sun sets on the horizon. It is one of those moments when you have to stop and watch it happen.
Where To Stay
With the growing popularity of this beach, many resorts and hotels have come up in this small village.
I stayed in Abhishek Beach Resort and Spa which is set right on the seafront. A well-kept resort with all amenities, it is one of the best places for your sojourn in Ganpatipule.
In addition, you can witness a fabulous sunset from the terrace of the in-house restaurant. The main beach is almost 15 minutes walk from here.
Book A Room in Abhishek Beach Resort and Spa.
Another good option is Hotel Grand Ganesha. It is a mid-range hotel, conveniently located at a walkable distance from the beach. Check the price and book your stay at Hotel Grand Ganesha.
Best Time To Visit
Winter months lasting November to February are considered the best months to visit Ganpatipule beach. The weather remains pleasant throughout the day but nights are colder.
The summer season starts knocking from March and lasts till May. The months of March and April are also not bad for a trip but avoid May, which is the hottest month. From June to September, it’s monsoon time, not an ideal season to visit a beach.
Nearby Places To Visit
A short vacation spanning 2 days should be ideal for a beach trip to Ganpatipule. If you have a day or two to spare, consider exploring some of the interesting attractions located close by.
About a kilometer away from the beach is a sprawling open-air museum, known as Prachin Konkan Museum. It offers a glimpse into the history of Konkan, their culture and traditions.
They have depicted a typical Konkani village of the olden days with life-size statues made of clay and woods. You need to pay a very nominal fee of Rs 40 per person to visit the museum. It is open from 8: 30 am to 6 pm on all days.
Another attraction worth seeing is Jaigad Fort, which lies almost 20 km away from the beach. It is a 16th-century fort built by the Bijapur kings.
Strategically located on a cliff, the fort offers captivating views of the Arabian sea. Jaigad fort is recognized as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Nearly 6 km away from Ganpatipule is Malgund beach, which is another serene beach on the Konkan coast. This beach is even less commercialized. So, you can see only a handful of tourists at any point in time.
It is an excellent place for those seeking to spend some me-time amidst nature. A few water sports facilities are also available at this beach.
